The history of The People's Building, a City of Aurora-owned multi-use arts hub located at 9995 E Colfax Ave, is as dynamic as Aurora itself. Once a ski shop and a rent-to-own furniture store, it was acquired by the City of Aurora's Office of Urban Renewal and Redevelopment in 2014. In 2016, the city renovated the building to create programmable performance and event space. With an investment of over 2.5 million+ into the building's revitalization since 2014, The People’s Building is now utilized as a gallery and a flexible event space for cultural events, workshops, meetings, independent artists, musicians, dancers, and event planners, hosting over 300 events a year with over 13,000 guests in 2024. The mission of this unique facility is to provide affordable access to high-quality event and performance space to Denver metro artists and nonprofits. The People’s Building sits along East Colfax, a majority-minority neighborhood with many residents with low income and where over 160 languages are spoken.
